A Night to Remember: Elevating Māori Voices at Local & Lit!

We’re still buzzing after an incredible night bringing our whānau and community together! Connecting face-to-face with candidates, especially those standing for the Māori ward, gave us an even deeper appreciation for the importance of Māori representation and strong Māori voices in our local democracy.

So often, Māori candidates have been overlooked—left off the invite list or not given the platform to speak at candidate events. That’s why it was so important for us to create this space, ensuring that everyone running for Māori wards had a chance to be heard. We stand by the belief that every candidate deserves the opportunity to share their vision, especially when it comes to kaupapa Māori and the future of our communities.

It’s also important to acknowledge the three regions where Māori ward candidate profiles were left out—an oversight we must not ignore as we continue to push for fair and equal representation.

The night was made even more special by the incredible talents of Timena, Awhi, and the powerhouse performance from Jordyn with a Why, whose music brought everyone together and reminded us of the strength and vibrancy of our community.

Thank you to everyone who attended, who supported, and who continues to advocate for Māori wards and Māori voices. Events like these are a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we uplift one another and stand together.
