After years of community effort, Maungatapere now has a new public toilet block to serve locals and visitors passing through this busy township. A special highlight is the stunning mural of kererū (native wood pigeons) painted by Whangārei artist Earnest Bradley on the toilet block, celebrating the birds that visit the nearby trees.
Maungatapere’s community campaigned hard for these toilets, holding a petition and sending letters of support to the Council. As a key route between Whangārei and Dargaville, and a rapidly growing area, the community’s voice was heard. Local representatives spoke at Council meetings, with a total of 650 signatures supporting the project.
The toilets, located behind the carpark near the Maungatapere Community Centre, will be open 24/7, with security features like CCTV and sensor lights. The Council thanks everyone involved for making this important community project a reality.
