Last week in Whangārei, a significant event took place to promote connection, inclusion, and shared purpose within the community as part of the Welcoming Communities kaupapa between Whangārei District Council and Te Huinga.
A formal Māori pōwhiri was held at Terenga Paraoa Marae, led by the Te Huinga hapū collective and Kaumātua Taipari Munroe.
The event was part of the ongoing commitment to the Welcoming Communities programme, an initiative that promotes inclusion and belonging for all residents and newcomers. It brought together a diverse group of attendees, including long-term residents, recent arrivals, and those experiencing a pōwhiri for the first time.
This gathering was a meaningful milestone in fostering a District where everyone feels seen, valued, and at home. Thank you to mana whenua and all who participated in making this event a success. More Welcoming Communities initiatives are upcoming to continue engaging and connecting both newcomers and existing residents.
